GARY DAVIS

Actor and Singer

Time and Liesure Review of Strictly Ballroom The Musical UK Tour 2022/3

Although every single member of the cast provides a fantastic comic cameo (and appears to be having a ball in the process), I have to single out Gary Davis as Barry Fife, the egotistic dance federation president who wants to ruin Scott’s career. It is a monstrously entertaining caricature which provides some fantastic absurd moments, with the extra bonus of Davis’s fine singing voice. At one point Mark Sangster (as Scott’s henpecked dad) and Quinn Patrick (as Les, Scott’s mum’s dance partner) join him in a Three Amigos-style trio that brings the house down.

ABOUT

From his first notes as a choir boy Gary has had an amazing journey, worked in the most amazing places and with some of the most amazing artists. Growing up in Surrey he was privileged to go to Tiffin School in Kingston which, not only had an excellent musical history, but was a feeder school for the National Youth Music Theatre. After twelve years performing with the NYMT he studied drama at the Liverpool John Moore's University. Upon graduating he became the manager of the Abraham Moss Community Theatre in North Manchester which he did for fourteen years before leaving to pursue his life long dream to tread the boards. These days he lives with his wife in Greater Manchester and can often be seen touring in Musical Theatre productions, his most recent being the 2019 UK Tour of 'Annie!' in which he played President Roosevelt and PC Ward. He followed this with Christmas in Panto, just before lockdown, at the Malvern Theatres as The Emperor in 'Aladdin', working alongside John Challis of 'Only Fools and Horses' fame. Since the lifting of lockdown he has played Peacham in 'The Beggars Opera' (Queen's Theatre Barnstaple) and the King in 'Sleeping Beauty' (Palace Theatre, Mansfield).
